S.A.G.E would like to officially announce our community altar for Dia De los Muertos. For those who aren’t familiar with the cultural celebration, it is a time to honor loved ones who passed away, honoring them from November 1st to the 2nd. This celebration combines the ancient Aztec custom of celebrating ancestors with All Souls’ Day. We do this by placing a photo of our loved one along with any tangible item they held closest to them. You can drop off your photo and item at the front desk by NOVEMBER 1st (please put your name and cohort on a sticky note with the items). Please bring a frame for your photo if you decide to participate. The altar is located on the DVX site. We hope everyone is able to participate and hold space for remembrance during this time.

To help students and families learn about financial aid at SJSU, they are hosting two Financial Aid Webinars with the first one being this Wednesday October 26th. These virtual sessions will help guide students and families with  the FAFSA/CADAA (California Dream Act) application process.

They will cover:

•  A brief overview of the FAFSA/CADAA application presented by SJSU Financial Aid and Scholarship team.
•  Reminders of important dates, deadlines and requirements.
•  Tips to avoid common mistakes.
•  Learn about more upcoming events and resources our SJSU Student Outreach and Recruitment (SOAR) Team is hosting in the coming weeks!

DV Connect Clubs: BSU, Connect Crew and Community Service Club are partnering with Lava Mae; a non-profit that turns old buses into mobile showers for the homeless community. We need your help to get the above listed donations. Work with your families, students, parents, etc. and we encourage you to bring something! New Socks, Deodorant,Toothbrush & Paste, Hand Sanitizer, Q-tips, Brushes/combs are welcome! Students! Thank you to all Da Vincians who joined us on Thursday 10/6 for our Financial Aid Workshop for Senior Families.  In this workshop, we provided a general overview and explanation of the federal student financial aid process. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the California Dream Act Application (CADAA) were explained along with grants, federal loans and scholarships.  The session was recorded and can be found HERE

Important Reminders and Resources on Financial Aid:

• The FAFSA opened on October 1^stand is due March 2^nd for CSUs, UCs, and California Community Colleges. The FAFSA deadlines for private and out-of-state universities vary.  Please check their respective websites for financial aid deadlines. We encourage you to apply early!  Here is a helpful overview of the FAFSA and the documents needed to complete the application. 

• To complete and sign a FAFSA electronically, both the student and the parent need an FSA ID.  CLICK HERE for information/a helpful video on creating an FSA ID.

• If you are applying to a private college, you many need to complete the FAFSA and the CSS Profile.  The CSS Profile is used to assess the student for institutional aid, which may include merit-based aid.  Here is a list of colleges that requires the CSS Profile.

• If you are an undocumented student, you may be eligible for the state aid and institutional aid.   Please complete the DREAM Act Applicationto apply for these funds. Please connect with your counselor if you need support with this process.

• If you are or were a foster youth, you may qualify for the CHAFEE Grant. Please connect with your counselor if you need support with this process.
