Headsets are here!

Hello Connect HS Families,

The student headsets with microphone have finally arrived and are ready to be distributed to our students! This week, the headsets will be distributed on the following dates and times in the parking lot of the school campus located at 201 N. Douglas Street, El Segundo CA, 90045:

  • Wednesday, October 28th from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Thursday, October 29th from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Friday, October 30th from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM You can also pick up your Connect supply bag on this day only at any time, if you haven’t already—pull in to the parking lot and use LANE 3

To best expedite this process, please bring a letter-sized paper with the following information clearly written on it:  Student(s)’ school(s), Student(s)’ grade level, and Student(s)’ last and first name.  The student or parent/guardian will be asked to display that paper to the person distributing the headsets to facilitate the distribution. The headsets will be distributed under the large black canopy which will be set-up in Lane 1 of the parking lot, the lane closest to the gym.

No RSVP is necessary for these days.  Additional dates and times, including a possible weekend day, will be scheduled in the weeks to come in an effort to continue to provide opportunities for pickup for anyone who is unable to come by this week to get the headsets.

Please feel free to contact the school’s front office if you have any questions about this.

Thank you!

Important SLC information!

Greetings DV Connect HS Students and Parents!

Thank you for working hard to reflect on your year so far and share your reflection in a videotaped presentation or conversation with an adult at home. Under normal circumstances, we would come together for Student Led Conferences. Thank you for being flexible with a digital format. We are using this semester’s SLCs to understand where students are at with their ability to reflect and articulate their learning and will do our own reflecting afterwards to decide how to run SLCs next semester.

We are also offering optional opportunities for students and parents to meet with individual teachers. Please know these are intended to be in the spirit of SLCs–so not a teacher-parent sessions where students are talked about. Instead, families who wish to sign up (these meetings are optional) can talk reflectively about what is working and where students can grow. Sign up options are below:

Student SLC Checklist

Please follow the following steps to complete and submit your Student led Conference:

1. Create a Google Slide presentation with the following slides (you were provided a template but can make changes):

  • Slide 1: Title Slide
  • Slide 2: Overview of your presentation
  • Slide 3: Purpose of SLC (to give an overview of each of the classes you are taking and reflect on areas of strength and areas of growth)
  • Slide 4: Class 1 (Give an overview of the topics you have covered in this class.  What are you doing well in the class and what can you do better? If you are struggling, how can you find help?)
  • Slide 5: Class 2 (Give an overview of the topics you have covered in this class.  What are you doing well in the class and what can you do better? If you are struggling, how can you find help?)
  • Slide 6: Class 3  (Give an overview of the topics you have covered in this class.  What are you doing well in the class and what can you do better? If you are struggling, how can you find help?)
  • Slide 7: Advisory (How has this class helped you and what can make the class or your participation in the class better?)
  • Slide 8: What questions do you have? (Student, please ask this of the adult you are presenting to)

2. Please make your presentation 7-10 minutes. You will likely need to practice. If you find yourself finishing early, go back and look at each slide–what more can you say about your strengths, your areas of growth, a goal for the future, a Habit of Heart and Mind you are or can apply?

3. In addition to sharing your SLC with the adult(s) in your life, each of your teachers will watch your presentation for insight on the ideas you present.

4. Record your presentation on Zoom. Here is an instructional video from YouTube if you need help. Make sure you save your recording. You will probably have the option to save to your computer or to the cloud. Either works! If you record to the computer, move the recording to your Google Drive and share the link with your teachers. If you record to the cloud, Zoom will email you a link you can send to your teachers.

5. Don’t forget to email the recorded Zoom link to your three teachers and your advisor.

6. So that we can learn and grow, please have the adult you presented to take this survey.

Thank you! We are looking forward to seeing your SLC!

Your Da Vinci Connect Team!

Parent Training: Suicide Prevention & Awareness

Good evening DV Connect HS parents, guardians, and caregivers,

Da Vinci Connect is in the process of creating awareness this year with regards to suicide prevention, awareness of warning signs, increasing resiliency, and training of key people in the process. Most importantly, you, the parents, guardians, or caregivers. You are a crucial part of this project and process.

When schools closed to students and staff due to COVID-19, many parts of our school community were affected, such as our planned training events. However, the Center for Distance and Online Learning (CDOL) division of the LA County Office of Education (LACOE) recently developed and released a set of screencasts for online parent training. This training is focused on suicide prevention, awareness of warning signs, and increasing resiliency. It is important to note; each segment is not meant to be a stand-alone segment, which means that we ask you ultimately to watch each of them in order and its entirety. By design, each segment is no longer than 15 minutes because you may not have an opportunity to view content like this for an extended period of time.

Student Documentary Competition hosted by CSPAN

Greetings DV Connect HS students and families!
Please see the below for an exciting competition opportunity, and click on the link at the bottom for more info and how to enter:

Charter Communications, locally known as Spectrum is once again proud to support C-SPAN and its annual StudentCam documentary competition. With many students across the country adapting to a virtual or hybrid model of learning, StudentCam 2021 offers an opportunity for project-based learning that can be particularly rewarding for both teachers and students, regardless of the educational setting.

The competition invites middle and high school students to join the national conversation on the challenges our country is currently facing by creating a 5- to 6-minute documentary on this theme: Explore the issue you most want the president and new Congress to address in 2021. Next spring, the C-SPAN Education Foundation will award 150 student and 53 teacher prizes totaling $100,000.

To ensure students’ success in these challenging times, Spectrum is committed to help bridge the digital divide with enhanced measures that expand internet access and maintain connectivity for remote learners.

We hope you’ll join us in getting the word out about C-SPAN’s StudentCam and how it serves as an innovative enrichment-learning experience well-suited to these unprecedented times. For more information on the competition, please visit www.studentcam.org
